The Greeks called it rotten sludge. Such an appellation is explained by the fact that sapropel is really formed of soil muck, humus, plankton, dead vegetation and the remains of living organisms on the bottom of freshwater bodies. In fact it is a centuries-old bottom sedimentation. Its beneficial properties have long been known to people, thus recently quarried and dry sapropel is applied to in agriculture, landscape designing and health care. It perfectly regenerates soils and increases their fertility. It is used in physiotherapy practice for various applications, pelopathy and mud baths. It is widely used as feed for livestock.
Sapropel as a feed additive for pigs
As a result of experiments and researching it was stated that sapropel as a feed supplement (or additive) for piglets had produced a tremendous effect. Within 60 days the weight of piglets increased from 15 to 32 kg. The piglets ate sapropel with great enthusiasm having a healthy look. Sapropel as a feed additive may be given in group feeders and can be moisturized with whey. Sapropel may be given along with the conventional food, mixed with different grains, soybean meal, fish flour or fish and silage.
Since in sapropel vitamins, macro- and microelements, humic acids and bio stimulants are combined very successfully, sapropel is an excellent feed additive for livestock. Moreover, pigs show some of the best indexes of growth.
In addition to increasing the body’s resistance of the pigs to unfavorable factors sapropel significantly reduces the cost of feeding. The livestock reproductive functions are also improved. In order to achieve the maximum results of such a feeding supplement sapropel is dried and saturated with protein. In dried form it is very convenient to be transported and mixed with feed. To enrich sapropel with protein paprim is most commonly used. This protein-vitamin concentrate is obtained using culture Candida-Giramonti on pre-cleaned liquid paraffin oil.
Thorough researches proved that the meat and the lard from the pigs raised on feed containing sapropel are full of vitamins and also have great taste qualities.
Sapropel as a component in the diet of cattle
Rationing of sapropel supplement for cattle depends largely on the age of the animals, their species, productivity and characteristics of the main diet.
For feeding cattle the grass grown on the basis of sapropel is often used. Within seven days the seedlings are 8 cm high. Grass additives can be grown in any season without limitation, so it is a profitable source of regular feeding. Such a supplement effectively eliminates the deficiency of vitamins and increases milk yield up to 500 liters.
Sapropel is rich in salts of iron, calcium and phosphorus, making a great affect on vitamin and mineral composition of the dairy product.
The feed additive in the form of sapropel rich in minerals is a good way for the prevention of rickets among calves.
The researches have allowed to prove that supplements based on sapropel added to the diet of calves had improved the morphological and biochemical parameters of their blood and positively influenced their productive indexes.
It is known that the sapropel improves the immune system of animals, thus increasing natural resistance to viruses and diseases. Mixing it with feed, it is possible to achieve a significant rise in productivity in a short period of time. Moreover, a rapid increase in the weight of the cattle is observed.
Sapropel has a number of therapeutic properties, owing to which the costs of medical care are significantly reduced.
Sapropel also accelerates the process of maturation of the cattle reproductive system.
Modern agriculture is increasingly applying to natural organic supplements. Mineral additives on the basis of sapropel are non-toxic and harmless. Sapropel is not something new, as it has been known and used successfully for a long time, but the latest developments and experiments with its composition and properties make it possible to achieve a new result of a higher quality level.
